I love shopping for food almost as much as I love eating it! Because of these two realities, I often find myself grocery shopping and spending more money than my budget allows for this habit. Recently, though, I’ve been getting better at sticking to my budget and shopping less than I have in the past, and this is how!
First off, I don’t shop on an empty stomach. You’ve likely heard the phrase ‘don’t shop hungry’ before because while it’s practically common knowledge that shopping hungry can have consequences, it’s hardly ever acknowledged. Shopping on an empty stomach will make you far more likely to buy things that you don’t really need, as you’ll be fueled by wants rather than needs, so by all means, try to avoid this.
Second, I don’t impulsively go to my local grocery store whenever I hear it calling to me. I usually try to pack my lunch, in the mornings, before I come to work, that way I don’t spend an absurd amount of money eating out during the week. Third, I go to the store fully equipped with a list and an estimated budget. Typically, for each grocery run, I allow myself about 5 dollars to buy something that I want but don’t need. It’s best to be very specific with this list. In addition, it can also be beneficial to make a food menu for the week so that you know exactly which ingredients you’ll need during the week, and you can make your budget as accurate as possible.
