5 Things to Consider when Job Searching

When looking for your first job, the paycheck may be the only thing on your mind. However, it’s important to remember that pay isn't the most important factor when it comes to your job. Remember to consider these 5 things the next time you’re looking for a new gig!

1. Hours

Before committing to a new job, make sure you understand your regular working hours. It’s important to know whether you’ll be working a set or changing schedule. Be sure to consider how your work hours will affect other aspects of your life. If you’re a student, working late on school nights may not be beneficial.

2. Benefits

If you’re new to the workforce, you may assume that benefits are only things like insurance and retirement contributions. These things may not be important to you when you’re looking for your first job as a high school student. But, there are plenty of other potential benefits that employers offer that could be useful to you. Be sure to look into things like paid time off and wellness plans, which include things like discounts on gym memberships!

3. Workplace Culture

This is one thing that may be difficult to look into prior to your start date but, it’s extremely important. Do employees enjoy their jobs? Do they enjoy working with each other? Do they feel valued by management? Try to get as much information as possible before accepting a job.

4. Growth Opportunities

While interviewing, always ask about opportunities to advance in the company. Doing this will show the employer that you’re planning on investing time with the company for an extended period of time. Be sure to ask about things like promotions and potential to pursue different areas of the company.

5. Educational Opportunity

You want to work for a company that helps their employees grow whenever possible. Educational opportunities are one of the many ways employers can do this. Ask about whether the company provides stipends for continuing ed courses or professional degrees. Many companies offer things like tuition reimbursement which can be extremely beneficial.
